Queer shorts, cabaret return

in the fall for Out in Akron

by Terry Bates

Akron-This year Out in Akron will celebrate seven years of LGBT cultural events.

Some of the best talent available has been seen on the Out in Akron stage. Every year proved to be bigger and better, with celebrities ranging from John Waters, Harvey Fierstein and Culture Club to Keith Boykin, Del Martin and Phyllis Lyons.

Those who have never attended an Out in Akron event have truly missed a great opportunity. This year the Akron Pride Center will host this weekend of events for the second year.

In an attempt to learn from our mistakes and still provide the weekend experience that all look forward to, the Pride Center has scaled back the calendar.

Friday, October 8 will feature the ever popular Queer Film Shorts at the University of Akron. Films have been submitted from all over the world. On Saturday, October 9, put on your dancing shoes and come to dinner and entertainment presented by Helen Welch. Don't forget to attend the favorite event of all, Cabaret Q, this year again at Greystone Hall. The line-up will amuse, astound and entertain the audience.

For those interested in planning these events, the Out in Akron committee meets the

Akron Pride Center hosts a diverse array of groups

Akron-The Akron Pride Center is an LGBT community center located at 71 North Adams St., just across from Summa City Hospital off Market St. The services and activities of the Akron Pride Center are open to any person who is supportive of the LGBT Community.

The Pride Center is operated by the Akron Area Pride Collective. The word collective is used because the Pride Center is a collective of the talents and skills drawn from members of the LGBT community and from its allies.

The Pride Center serves as a safe meeting location for several LGBT organizations. LGBT social clubs, political organizations and religious groups hold their meetings and activities at the Pride Center. No alcohol is permitted, and smoking is accommodated in the smoking room.

The Pride Center also hosts monthly seminars, educational meetings and social events. A unique feature of the Pride Center is that all of the groups and activities encourage the inclusion of diversity from within the LGBT community.

Some of the Pride Center groups include: • Freedom from Alcohol

Open to all GLBT people who have a desire to stay sober, every Thursday at 8 pm. Just like one alcoholic can help another alcoholic, maybe one GLBT person can help another with issues that can't be openly talked about in other AA meetings.

• Bi Pride

Bi Pride is a group for bisexual, bi-curious, or simply bi-friendly/bi-supportive people which meets the first Friday of the month at 7 pm at the Pride Center. After a potluck dinner, the group engages in an open discussion focused on bi-related content. An entree is furnished for which the group passes the hat. Plates, napkins, eating utensils, coffee and sodas are always furnished. The specific content for the agenda of Bi Pride is a group effort, not an individual endeavor.

After the meeting ends at 9 pm, the discussion usually continues at Angel Falls. Contact Priscilla with any questions: 330-873-9738 or psmith@uakron.edu.

GLAMOUR Pride

GLAMOUR Pride, Gay and Lesbian Adolescents Modeling Our Pride, is the Pride Center's youth group. They meet every Mon-

day from 6-7:30 pm at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Akron at 3300 Morewood Rd., off of Market Ave. across from Summit Mall. See www.angelfire.com/ultra/ glamourpride for more info.

•P-FLAG

P-FLAG is a GLBTQ-friendly organization what supports the families and friends of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning people. Their meetings are held at the North Springfield Presbyterian Church 671 Canton Rd., on the third Thursday of each month at 7:15 pm. For details call 330342-5825. In Wooster call 330-264-7396 In Alliance call 330-821-3484.

• Spiritual Thought

This is an all inclusive group and every spiritual seeker is welcome regardless of gender or sexual orientation. For more information, call 330-464-6477. • Trans Pride

Trans Pride is an open diverse group welcoming all people with gender related interests meeting on the third Friday of each month at the Akron Pride Center and on the fourth Friday of each month at the Cleveland Lesbian and Gay Center. Meetings start at 7 pm with a potluck dinner followed by a genderoriented program. All programs involve a moderated question and answer period.
